The Russian Academy of Sciences held the first meeting of the Scientific Council “Quantum Technologies”

The first meeting of the RAS Scientific Council “Quantum Technologies” was attended by 17 members of the Council Bureau, 22 Council members and 17 representatives of 16 different organizations.

The chairman of the Council, the RAS Academician Gennady Krasnikov opened the meeting. He told the participants about the goals, objectives and the main trends of the Council’s work, underlined that the first meeting was devoted to the outline of quantum technologies.

The Council was established on June 2, 2020 by the Decree of the RAS Presidium. It joins scientists from several RAS departments, the Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education as well as scientists from other institutes that conduct researches in the areas of the Council’s activities.

There were made 5 reports during the meeting:
1. “Quantum technologies for data collection, processing and transmission” by the RAS Academician Igor Kalyaev and D.Chem. Maxim Vakshtein
2. “A roadmap for quantum computing: general information” by the RAS corresponding member Nikolai Kolachevsky.
3. “A roadmap for quantum communications: general information” by Ph.D. Artur Gleim and Ph.D. Pavel Dorozhkin.
4. “A roadmap for quantum sensors: general information” by Sc.D. Sergei Bukashkin.
5. “Information on the activities of science and research centers in quantum technologies” by Ph.D. Grigory Andrushchak.

During the discussion, it was notes that the roadmaps presented at the meeting had a number of intersections. Several recommendations were done to form the way of quantum technologies development. It was reached a preliminarily agreement between the Ministry of Industry and Trad of Russia and the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia on financing the renovation of laboratory facilities, research and work in radio electronics during the next 5-7 years. In addition, during the meeting it was presented the information about the coordination committee for quantum technologies, which includes representatives of Rosatom, Russian Railways and Rostec.

In his closing speech the Chairman of the Council, the RAS academician Gennady Krasnikov proposed to define the fundamental problems of quantum technologies in order to discuss them in the RAS Presidium and search for funding sources. He noticed that there is a possibility of export examination of the new state programs related to quantum technologies by the Council in order to avoid duplication and also suggested expanding the work limits in the presented roadmaps.

The next meeting of the Council will be held in November 2020.
