The project “Strong AI System SAI-R1” was discussed at the Russian Academy of Sciences

On January 21 the meeting devoted to the Strong Artificial Intelligence system SAI-R1 was held at the Russian Academy of Sciences. The discussion was chaired by the head of the priority technological sector for electronic technologies, academician secretary of ONIT RAS, general director of MERI JSC, RAS academician Gennady Krasnikov.

The meeting was attended by 50 scientists and AI specialists from 24 organizations including ONIT RAS, MERI JSC, FRC “Computer Science and Control” of RAS, Lomonosov Moscow State University, Scientific Research Institute of System Analysis of RAS, Sberbank, and many others; 16 of them spoke at the meeting.

In his entering speech academician Gennady Krasnikov noted the importance of carrying national research concerning strong artificial intelligence.

Sc.D. Dunin-Barkowski made a report on the project SAI-R1.
The project SAI-R1 is based on a thinking agent - a computing server with software that implements artificial neural networks. Input devices - video cameras, microphones and touch screens, output devices - monitors and speakers. The system is located in a room with enough space for social infrastructure - the workplace for 5 specialists and the equipment accommodation. Machine social education is carried out in cooperation with specialized groups of experts in real time.

The head of the section for Information technologies and automatization of ONIT RAS, academician Igor Sokolov said that according to Lomonosov MSU development program it was planned to create seven scientific schools that would unite scientists and lecturers of all MSU departments. Among them - the “Brain, Cognitive Systems, Artificial Intelligence” school that is functioning now and involves about 200 students. The most important aspect of the school is its interdisciplinary structure, which makes it possible to get closer to understanding the work of the brain through a mathematical description of processes and phenomena in neurobiology.

The meeting participants unanimously supported the need for research in the field of strong artificial intelligence. They recommended Sc.D. Witali Dunin-Barkowski to prepare an adjusted project, in which the scientific novelty and practical significance of the project should be formulated; to indicate the methods, including mathematical approaches, architectures, mechanisms of self-organization of a thinking agent, system integration of existing solutions and results of applicants; consider the possibility of specific practical applications of a thinking agent with specific goals, e.g. for unmanned vehicles; indicate approaches to significantly accelerate the training of artificial neural networks in comparison with existing ones, as well as work out a number of other scientific, technological and organizational issues.

Academician Igor Sokolov was recommended to initiate the organization of the Scientific Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences on Artificial Intelligence.

In his closing remarks, the chairman of the meeting, academician Gennady Krasnikov expressed confidence in the integration of the efforts of domestic scientists and specialists in the development of strong artificial intelligence.
